Konnichiwa!

JapanHuman Resources Manager Alicia Wilkins recently journeyed to Japan to interview candidates for our new overseas locations and observe a very special sale event. She shares her experience here.

We had such an amazing trip to Tokyo! Our agenda was twofold: One, to reconnect with our existing seven employees, and second, to hire more team members.

Our Japan team

We began launching Vera Bradley in Japan roughly one year ago, through pop-up stores. These retail outlets are temporary in nature and allow us to see how the customer responds to our brand in a variety of different markets and locations. Our Japanese team did an amazing job helping us set up, manage and tear down these pop-up stores.

Vera Bradley pop-up store: Isetan

From the moment we stepped onto our Japan Airlines flight from Chicago to Tokyo, it was apparent why Vera Bradley is such good fit for this country. We both live by a standard of values: Respect, humility and caring, to name a few. Our flight attendants were amazing throughout the 11½-hour hour flight and the hotel staff could not have been more accommodating, greeting us by name as we arrived.

Flight to Japan

After we adjusted to the 14-hour time difference, we were able to sit down and talk with each of our employees individually. Each was extremely enthusiastic about the brand and product, expressing their desire to continue supporting our stores in Japan. One by one, they commented on how much they enjoyed their team. The funny thing is, if I were to walk around any of our offices in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and ask employees what they like best about working at Vera Bradley, they would say the exact same thing! Despite language and cultural differences, Vera Bradley has a way of bringing people together. We feel like we are sharing in something special, which bonds us together in a way that cannot be explained. It was incredible to sit with each team member and understand how the company, product and their fellow team members have impacted their lives over the past 12 months.

Store Manager Makiko

Over the next several days, we interviewed candidates, some familiar with Vera Bradley and others not. Some of them had seen our store in Ala Moana, Hawaii, and were thrilled that we were coming to Japan. And in keeping with the culture (both Japanese and Vera Bradley) we offered each candidate a Clip Zip ID as a thank you for spending time with us.

Our final day in Japan was the first-ever Friends and Family Sale. Although on a much smaller scale, it was just like our Outlet Sale in Fort Wayne, with customers lining up before the sale opened! Our staff (including some new members) worked so hard to make the event, which lasted four days, a success. They provided excellent service to the customers, kept the sales floor stocked and tidy and wore a smile on their faces throughout. It was a privilege to see them in action.

I feel so honored to have been part of the process of building the Vera Bradley presence in Japan. The passion and enthusiasm our overseas employees have for the company and product will be contagious as more people are introduced to our colors and character.

Come on in and smell the roses

Mother's Day Store Windows

The question was first posed in early February … “How can we translate the lovely, heartfelt feelings of Mother’s Day into a Store experience?” To take it a step further, our Visual team ventured to not just celebrate the occasion, but to gift all of the Mothers who stop by and see us, as well.

Two ladies took to the task. Vera Bradley Sr. Retail Visual Design Specialist Janielle Gregory (who used her recent wedding as added inspiration) and Retail Field Visual Design Specialist Courtney Lauderdale began conceptualizing a gorgeous display especially for May.

With sketch in hand, the Visual team enlisted the expertise of Toles Flowers, Inc. in Anderson, Indiana, to assemble a living model. After 6 hours of pruning and strategic positioning, the intricate details of the ladies’ drawing were decided.

The team reached out to a bouquet of accomplished florists across the eastern part of the country to recreate the final Mother’s Day display. This past Wednesday, blossoms started popping up in 11 Vera Bradley Store locations, as our impressive group took to fabricating the installation.

So, what kind of experience does it take to assemble a retail window display consisting of roughly 660 flowers of 10 different varieties constructed around two separate wire forms? In the case of Fort Wayne florist Sherry Armstrong-Miller, of Armstrong Flowers, Inc., a few years of assembling arrangements for the White House Easter Egg Roll (yes, the White House), certainly helps.

“I love working with Vera Bradley,” Armstrong-Miller said, “because they’re so connected to the community. I [also] love a challenge.” As a member of the American Institute of Floral Designers, her “challenges” have included parade floats, displays for the Oscars and forming a “showstopper” for Elton John.

Armstrong-Miller and her assistant Leslie Presley, allowed us to peek over their shoulders and document the 3-hour process of bringing our Mother’s Day design to fruition. It’s amazing to think that each display will be refreshed every 2 – 3 days, as needed.

“It’s been awesome to see how each window is a little different,” Lauderdale said. “True to the nature of our individually unique retail spaces, the arrangement and setup of each installation has been influenced by everything from the color of the wallpaper to the personal creativity of the florist. Small nuances like that is what I think makes this so special for our guests.”

Our hope is that you’ll bring the special women in your life – Mom, Grandma, your daughter – in to enjoy this beautiful arrangement in person. It is, after all, our gift to you for all you do.

The window display will be in Stores through Friday, May 11, at Vera Bradley at Burlington Mall, Jefferson Pointe, King of Prussia, The Shops at La Cantera, Mall of America, NorthPark Center, Roosevelt Field, Tysons Corner Center, Twelve Oaks Mall, Water Tower Place and The Woodlands Mall

Peek-a-boo

Vera Bradley Baby Celebration

At Vera Bradley, the arrival of bubbly, chubby-cheeked little babies is definitely cause to gather and gush. And gather we did, last night at the annual Baby Celebration. At least 56 families welcomed, or will welcome, new additions this year, and that’s just in the Fort Wayne-area offices.

The planning committee did an outstanding job of pulling together a party packed with an abundance of adorable touches; almost too much cute to contain under one roof, really. Decorated in a Summer Cottage theme, the festivities included little ones posing for the camera, a delicious spread for the mommies and daddies to dine on, and tasty pink and blue punch.

A Mother’s Story journal made for a sweet keepsake and parting gift as, one by one, the babies were loaded back into their carriers to head home.

Welcome to the world, little ones!
